MARTINE CARMELLE

The different typologies of fear.png

ABOUT THE ARTIST

From a young age, I had to adapt to different environments, moving from the comfort of my home to a foreign country. These spatial and cultural shifts triggered anxiety and panic attacks. I became aware of how space influences internal states. I realised I can’t change internal emotional space, but I can manipulate external spatial elements to affect perception. My anxiety may have contributed to the autoimmune disease I now live with. If I had faced these negative feelings earlier, would my life have taken a different path? We interact with space every day, consciously or not. Our hands, the most tactile parts of our body, engage with physical structures constantly. Anxiety creates fear and restraint, which are embedded in our spatial behavior.
